I was up in Vancouver a few weeks ago. I love Canada (I'll periodically just intersperse that statement in or out of context). I ordered a Scotch at Chill Winston. Behind me was a birthday party. But it looked more like a bachelorette party. Were 23 girls and two guys (yes, I counted (I love Canada)). Both of the guys had girlfriends.
Before I get halfway down my Johnny Walker black, 8 of them flanked me on either side of my bar stool and asked where I was from, "You're the only one here without a friend," one glowing blond explained, "you must be from out of town."
The night quickly escalated with me taking 17 of the girls to Granville Street (the club district). The guys with girlfriends came with us and then interviewed me. I bought them shots of Don Julio. I apparently passed their exam as they began to introduce me to all of the 15 single girls (I love Canada).
Turns out, they all worked in a couple of the restaurants in Yaletown. They knew everyone. Now, through them, I know everyone in Vancouver. But I got lucky (I love Canada).
Meeting and building a relationship with the people who are in the center of Vancouver's business, social, cultural, art and music worlds is not easy. But if you're in business, if you're trying to get something done, if you're trying to get yourself out there in front of the people who make the decisions in Vancouver, you'll need credible and influential friends.
Few are more influential or have more reach than a PR pro. Think about it. Why do think people go into Public Relations? It's because they like telling stories. Why do you think they stay in PR? It's because people like hearing them.
