If you're a business person, I bet I know what your first reaction was, "why don't our product videos get a jillion views?!?!?!"

Well, there's a real and physical psychology that goes into creating a meme that spreads faster than a VD in a free love community. It's actually got several components. You might be surprised at how simple the core elements of making a Viral Video are but how difficult they are to replicate intentionally.

World's Top Fashion Bloggers Who Aren't Celebrities (Yet)

When new clients in the fashion industry ask us to build their site and help them market their new lines, often, they ask us about editorial write ups in Paper, Flaunt, Hearty, etc. They ask us if we know any of the writers and editors in big yet obscure hipster magazines.

Our answer generally sounds like, "Sure. But why?"

Then we ask them if they have an estimate of how many corporate buyers might call their offices in the LA Mart as a result of being featured in a magazine. If they're not sure, we tell them--zero.

The expectation many new clients have is that getting into a prime-time publication will get them into retail stores. It doesn't. We've been in everything from hipster publications to the WSJ and NYTimes. They just don't generate sales.

This is not to say you shouldn't try to get traditional print or TV media coverage. We advocate it. And we even have PR partners who will make sure you get that press. See: Top NYC and Los Angeles PR Public Relations Firms. But we advise that you do so for the right reasons. Press will generally not work as a sales generator. Press works best as marketing collateral. 

If You had to choose between taking a syndicated news anchor to a $200 lunch vs a non-celebrity blogger, who would you choose?

Even brilliant people with a Harvard or Wharton MBA get these two issues blurred up all the time. Marketing collateral is not designed to get you sales. It's designed to get you in the door. Once you're past the door, it's "sales generators" that are designed to get you into the wallet.

You need both. A well known publication will get you the credibility to get that sales meeting set up. But it's probably not going to get a buyer from Nordstrom's to call you. To do that, you'll need sales generators.

We've compiled a Top 100 list of "sales generators" for our fashion industry clients. These are the top niche fashion bloggers globally. They have influence beyond well known magazines for the following reasons:

1. Writers from well known print publications do not have an open dialogue with their readers.

2. Writers from well known print publications do not build a rapport with their readers.

3. Writers from well known print publications do not have personal influence over their readers. They don't let their readers into their personal Facebook account. They don't let their readers see their personal photos on Facebook. And they certainly don't do any drunk sexting with their readership on some random post Taco Tuesday 2am flurry.

4. Bloggers Do.

5. If you get a blogger to cover your line, you're not just reaching into their fanbase, you're reaching through to their friends.

We recommend that you follow all of them. Get to know them. Pitch them. In truth, the buyers at Nordstrom's read their blogs more than the hipster magazines. Their blogs get comments. Magazines don't.

Zachary's Smile Silver Lake Features Jillian Kliewer's Lama Glama. Pure Adorable.

I just had several cathartic conversations at Beatnik Bookster. You know, the kind that make you realize you're not alone in the world--the kind that actually make you feel like there is indeed intelligent life on earth. 

Two doors down was a small vintage boutique filled with beautiful people called Zachary's Smile. Turns out that there are two other locations in NYC. But tonight, what made this intimate location flowing with decent bottles of Meritage and Bordeaux beautiful were Lamas. No, not the ones that transcend ego and suffering. It was the lamas that hurl spit at you that made an impression.

Jillian Kliewer held a private reception (into which I trespassed) of her work. And the work is mostly good. She paints lamas on wood panels and canvas with angry yet oddly sensitive strokes. Her brushwork is organic--the kind you generally see flowing from 60 something year old master's hands. To my distaste, her choice of painting on wood felt cliche (although I don't see how it's more cliche than painting on canvas). Maybe contrived is a better word.

In any case, Ms. Kliewer, who had until recently served the best coffee in town at Intelligentsia, creates work that's ironically endearing. Her smiling lamas almost inspire an internal ohm.

Pro Tip: How to Crop a Youtube Video with Div Tag: Cropping Black Bars by Centering

Los Angeles Clothing Manufacturer DMResourceLA.com wanted to embed their youtube videos in their website. It's a minimal haute couture and fashion site. That's easy enough. But the problem is that their videos came with the control / play bar at the bottom and ugly black bars in the left and right side. 

Cropping the bottom control bar away is easy. We just put div around the object and gave the div a css attribute of overflow:hidden. Then we made the div height exactly 29px shorter than the height of the video.

The trouble is that if you try the same thing for the sides, it doesn't work. You can put center tags around the object or img picture you're trying to crop evenly on both sides but the object or img doesn't center. The narrower width div only crops off the right side.

So, to evenly crop both sides, just make your div width 40px narrower than the object or img width. Then in the object or img tag, specify a style="margin-left:-20px." Now, you're centered. If you want to do this across all your images or object embed videos, just set a css style for object or img as -20px for the left margin.

Is there just one? Yes, if you look at 99.999% of the worlds most promising applications and inventions. Just one. What is it? It wasn't the product or the invention. It was the inventor.

Let's imagine you were not the one popular kid in school. And lets imagine you discovered the most ergonomic, arch supporting, econically reasonable, sneaker with the longest lasting rubber sole poly-compound. Did you ever figure out why nobody else bought that same shoe? Did you ever figure out why everybody insisted on wearing those ugly vans-off-the-wall that tore-on-the-sides?
