How to Get Lots of Retweets: Pro Twitter Secret #37

Media_httpt3chh3lpcom_coryh

I remember a conference where a Harvard Business School professor spoke. He asked, "If you're going to sell a bible, who'd you rather sell it to? Someone with or without one?"

Most of us in the audience said, "without."

"How would you sell a bible to a non-christian?!" he glared back at us.

"If you're going to sell a bible, who'd you rather sell it to? Someone with or without one?"

"I'd have a much better chance of selling a bible to the fanatic who already has ten of em!"

He was right. There are two kinds of Twitter uers who follow you.

1) Christians and ... oh, wait... People who RT

and

2) People who don't.

In otherwords, there's really no sense asking people who never RT to Retweet a post for you. Is there?

So what I do is make a list of all the people who DO retweet. Then I use an @message asking them to RT me again. AFTER I've RT'd them or Follow Friday recommended them. NEXT: Top 10 Twitter Facebook and Google Viral Marketing Secrets

I have a greater RT frequency than @aplusk. It's true. If you have any questions, i'm at http://www.facebook.com/bob.wan.kim ... how can I help you?

Why you SHOULD stop #followfriday OR why you SHOULDn't feel bad if nobody loves you

I get mentioned several times in #followfridays. I have yet to notice a jump in my follower count. So I asked myself, "self, what if some big Twitter celebrity recommended me for #ff? Would my days of bloodshot eyes and sore fingertips from working up valuable critical analysis (i don't know the plurl form for analysis, sees?) be a quickly fading memory? Would I finally be on easy street?"

Then I got the answer. I compared my RT to @aplusk's. That is Ashton Kutcher. I have 300% more RTs. So i had to wonder, humbled and appreciatively, WHY?!?!?!

Is it because Ashton is an actor and people don't follow actor's political requests? No. Reagan, and the Governator disprove that.

Then would a tech insider have more popularity influence? Think football captain in high school.

I got my answer today. @ev, one of the founders of @twitter (you know, the new microblogging site) just tweeted THIS to his nearly million followers.

Pretty glowing. Let's say that only 1% of the people who follow him are online at the time. That makes a million drop to ten thousand. What percentage of people out of those 1% who are online would you say decided to follow @yongfook? THIS is how many followers he had about a week ago. The rest is simple math less organic growth.

In otherwords, don't worry about getting a plug from a bigshot. It's worthless. Make your own followers love you. Love is viral.
