When I moved to Finland, yes, I lived in Finland, I noticed that there were exactly zero words that sounded familiar to me.
That being the case, some of the words in and of themselves selectively became familiar to me. I began hearing words like "kiitos" far more often than others.
At breakfast, I'd hear "nälkäinen" more frequently than any other word. When we went out shopping, it was "kustannus."
I started writing down the words I heard most often. My list got to be about 80 words long.
I asked my girlfriend (the reason I moved to Finland cold turkey (you can imagine what she looked like)) what each word meant. I got, "thanks," "hungry," "in cost..."
That's all it took.
After learning no more than 80 vocabulary words, i was no longer in the dark.
When we went out to eat with all of Hannah's friends, when the bill came, when they debated where to go after dinner... I knew exactly what was going on. I knew what they were talking about.
