How One Simple Blog Post Got Me 3 New Clients this Month

I've been told that I'm pretty good at writing teasing headlines. Honestly though, everything I know about headlines, I learned from Ogilvy and @woodlandalyssa. There's a precise and unforgiving science to writing a headline that gets you to read the first line of a blog post. But there is an even more precise and unforgivingly rigid set of rules that get your reader to become your client.

One of my favorite blogs post that's prominently findable when you search: Iphone App Developer is making me $57,000 this month alone. It precisely follows the formula below...

Here's the great big magical triune formula to converting your readers into clients:

1) Rapport

2) Credibility

3) Volume

That's it. If you understand exactly what I mean by the above, you don't need to drip another second into reading farther. But if you do, I think you'll be happy you did.

You see, there are only two types of people you ever buy from -- evah:

1) Friends

2) Celebrities

That's it. Why? Because you've built up a rapport with your friends. And celebrities have credibility. And guess what, both have volume. Both occupy a significant volume of space in your life.

All you have to do to turn your blog into a client generating interdimensional space/time portal is to duplicate that triune formula precisely and you'll engender a perception of friendship, celebrity, and relationship volume. This is where it gets tricky. Unless you know the substructural formula to imbibe a linear blog post with a real world friend/celebrity aura, you'll never achieve that magical sauce.

How can the written word be a surrogate for a true friend and Paris Hilton?

To create rapport, credibility, and volume with a blog post, you've got to precisely impliment the following substructural formula:

1) Educate your reader - Credibility
Educating your reader builds your credibility since it establishes your subject matter / domain expertise.

2) Defend your reader - Rapport
Make it clear that while you have something to sell, you have your prospective client's best interests in mind -- even if it's at the expense of losing their business. The best example of this is the LA based Charter Drug Rehab Centers. Their slogan is, "If you don't get help at Charter, please, get help somewhere!"

One of my early advertising mentors, Bill Oxford used to have a page on his ad agency home page that said, "How to Know If You're Not Our Target Client." On that page, he tried his darnest to NOT get the reader to pick up that phone and ask for an initial consultation. But the criteria he used to try and push people away actually made them want to work with him even more. It's kinda like an old girl friend of mine. She told me that she didn't want to date anyone who didn't have a six pack (true story). Her anti-sales approach made me rise to the occasion (no, this is not a double entendre).

3) Get into Google Page One Under Several Intersecting Searches - Volume
That blog post above is in Page 1 of google under

"iphone app developer"
"iphone app developer nyc"
"iphone app developer LA"
"iphone app developer Los Angeles"

and many more. Google creates my volume for me. A prospective client will search for me using several different query terms. If I show up on page one under all of his searches, I've satisfied that 3rd and most elusive requirement - Volume. I'm like Amex -- everywhere they want to be. And yes, this month alone, i got several phone calls for iphone, android and ipad app development projects.

Media: LA's Top 100 NON-Celebrity Bloggers You Should Take to Lunch

If you had the choice to take either a prime-time NBC newscaster, an LA Times reporter, or a blogger to lunch at the Ivy on Robertson in Beverly Hills, who would you pick? This is not a trick question. If you took the newscaster out (pick any: Lisa Hernandez ABC7, Jessica Holmes KTLA5, Leslie Miller - ABC7, Lisa Siegel KCAL9. Kim Baldonado - NBC4) you'd have a big media van with requisite ET phone home dish on the roof and strobe lights accompany you.

Network Newscasters don't have a cult following (update: ummm, we might be wrong)

If you took the LA Times reporter out, you'd only have one photog with you but the guy would look really smart. And all the people at Ivy would think you were smart by association. If you took a blogger out to lunch, none of the above would happen. Nobody would notice. Well, nobody but the following:

Top Ten Reasons to Take a Blogger to Lunch as Opposed to Some Hot Newscaster:
10. Network news will give you 15 seconds.

9. Network news broadcasts to everybody (not a good thing).

Pro Tip: How to Crop a Youtube Video with Div Tag: Cropping Black Bars by Centering

Los Angeles Clothing Manufacturer DMResourceLA.com wanted to embed their youtube videos in their website. It's a minimal haute couture and fashion site. That's easy enough. But the problem is that their videos came with the control / play bar at the bottom and ugly black bars in the left and right side. 

Cropping the bottom control bar away is easy. We just put div around the object and gave the div a css attribute of overflow:hidden. Then we made the div height exactly 29px shorter than the height of the video.

The trouble is that if you try the same thing for the sides, it doesn't work. You can put center tags around the object or img picture you're trying to crop evenly on both sides but the object or img doesn't center. The narrower width div only crops off the right side.

So, to evenly crop both sides, just make your div width 40px narrower than the object or img width. Then in the object or img tag, specify a style="margin-left:-20px." Now, you're centered. If you want to do this across all your images or object embed videos, just set a css style for object or img as -20px for the left margin.

Wired Magazine started a wild-fire when they said, "The Web Is Dead."

Everyone from TechCrunch to Mashable blogged about that blog about blogs vs Facebook. To a large extent, Wired is right on the money. Discussion forums killed the BBS. And Facebook killed discussion forums. 

Facebook also killed Flickr. Or they at least killed Flickr's growth potential with the easiest photo uploading, tagging, and sharing software on earth - their own. 

So since Facebook is so easy to get into and so hard to get out of, let's go to the mountain since it ain't comin' to Mohammad anytime soon.

1. Build a NONCOMMERCIAL "Like" Page

Nobody Likes Your Business But You.

Nobody realizes that if you click "Like" you've just subscribed to the Page Admin's messages. Every few years, people get tricked into opting in for advertising. They do. When Google first came out with Adwords, you couldn't tell the difference between sponsored ads vs organic high rank search results. Advertisers got rich. 

Just a few weeks ago, Apple released iAds for their iPad and iPhone Apps. These ads are so interactive and beautiful that app developers are getting rich from people clicking just for the curiosity of it all.

Just about the same time, Mark Zuckerberg announced at his F8 Industry Conference that he would convert the "fan" button to a "like" button and let Facebook pages broadcast into the stream of those who clicked "like."

Whatever your industry, and business, I'm sure you can come up with a non commercial concept that's much easier to like than "Joe's Plumbing." Maybe Joe should try a page named, "Hot Showers" or "Bubble Baths." Then, he'd hit his target demographic and do so with zero resistance to "Like" conversion.

2. Copy and Paste your Edutisement to all the biggest pages until you get blocked
I hate spam. I hate sales people. But if a cologne saleman wants to educate me on the differences between French vs Italian herbs used in Gucci VS YSL, I'll listen and maybe even buy a bottle. So sure, post a message on any page you want. Go ahead. But make sure each post is valuable in and of itself. Make sure each of your posts are valuable to THE READER - NOT to you. Then, when they click through to your site, educate some more and sell the value of your product - not your product.

3. Contact the Admins of the Biggest Facebook Pages and Ask them to Post Your Message
You may have to offer them money. But if you put it all in perspective, even if you printed one million fliers at a five pennies each, you'd have spent $50,000. Then to distribute those fliers, you'd spend another $200,000 on the cheap. So even if
