What is a Meme: Lebron James' Powder Explains

In spite of all of Nike's marketing and media power, Lebron James' powder throw failed to become a meme. A meme can only happen if there is zero resistance. Powder availability was the point of resistance that killed Nike's campaign.

In French, the word "MEME" means "SAME."

It's time we had a new one. It's time we had a new "meme."

Budweiser's Whazzup campaign was a major success. This is because everyone has a phone and can say "whazzup." There was zero resistance.

Google Adwords VS Twitter VS Facebook Social Media

Recently, I've been getting a lot of RFPs from prospective clients who heavily spend on Google adwords. I'm here to stop that. 

Sure, there are many benefits and well, that's about it. Here they are:

The Pros For Paying Google Adwords
1. Immediacy
You start driving traffic immediately to your site. This is a major bonus when you've worked with 17 flaky designers who've all left your site in various states of chaos and disrepair of the last 8 months that were only supposed to be 1.

2. You get to Peek Into the Global Search Demand for Your Key Word Term
In other words, when you sign up for Google adwords, there's a keyword generator tool. It tells you how much traffic (RELATIVELY) there is demanding your term. So if you pay top dollar, you'll get valuable data about how much traffic your top competitor is getting.

3. You Get to See How Much Your Customer's Click Is Worth to Your Competitors
Just by being at the top of the sponsored ads, you'll immediately learn how much one click from a potential customer is worth to your competition. Some pay about $1.50 per click. Others, like "cosmetic surgeon beverly hills" can pay $175. per click.

Why You Should Stop Your Google Adwords Campaign
1. You've Had Time to Build Your Organic Traffic River 
Imagine if you could open a store in the Wilshire District of LA (all offices and no retail) and gradually inch it over onto Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills in 2 weeks. Well, you can. At least online you can. Work on your social media Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, Forums, Communities, Blogosphere, Quora, Reddit, Digg, PR, and Organic Google positioning hard and intensively. You'll be able to generate fifty fold more traffic than Adwords and at a fraction of the cost.

Think about it, when's the last time you even clicked on a sponsored ad?

There's a whole lot more traffic and customers out there that Adwords can't even touch. Adwords only touches about 1/500 of them.

This is a simple equation. If you searched for a product and bought it via Google Adwords, how many times will you repeat that behavior? If you saw a product mentioned through an influential blog or Twitter, how many times will you see that blogger or Tweeter? This is a recurring relationship that tends to yield recurring revenues.

The Worst Part
Worst of all, do the math: Do you know how many clicks you need from Adwords to generate one sale? Scientifically, you'll have to generate about 100 sales to build numbers you can bank on. 

However, to generate just one sale, if you've done any Adwords advertising, you know that you'll need to generate about 800 unique views to convert into a sale. If you're at a common $2.50 per click (aka unique view) you're at a whopping $2,000 to generate one sale. Let me run that by you again. To sell a $40 item, you've got to spend $2,000. Which is fine if your $40 item is a sale that recurs daily. But it won't be. See #3 Again.

Rolls Royce just issued a statement that they're looking for a PR firm who can clean up their name in the social media. It had something to do with an engine that exploded in mid-air and a Koala.

Rolls is smart. They are focusing on social media because they realize that even the front page of the New York Times gets forgotten the moment it hits that recycle bin by the door at Starbucks. Or if you're lucky, someone in a Tijuana Cantina will get one more impression at it in the stall. (No, we don't disapprove of traditional media. In fact, we argue for a traditional PR and Media approach for many clients)

Social Media, Twitter, Facebook, Yes, Even Facebook (chatter) keeps bouncing negative press around (besides those photos of you drunk in that TJ Cantina). Rolls Royce realizes that it will take some clever and influential brain power to quell the negative chatter. This is where it gets tricky. If you or Rolls were to hire a web native firm that thoroughly understood Twitter and Facebook but didn't have the PR experience depth of a traditional firm, your campaign could backfire worse than that engine did.

Positive and Negative Campaigns
People online are by far the most skeptical people on earth. They're generally of higher IQ, don't get enough exercise (making them grumpy), drink 3.71 more cups of coffee (making them even grumpier), and have seen every kind of white-washing endeavor. If it looks like you're trying to deflect or change the subject, you'll be worse off than just letting the negative buzz taper off. Everyone loves a good villain.

Budgeting a Social Media Marketing Budget Ehem.

Before you begin to write up a budget for your boss or client to approve, you've got to create a landscape where the final numbers you present will create a sigh of relief instead of a ghasp of panic. Right?

If you try and educate me about the value of VVS, flawless, white 1 ct diamonds after you've shocked me with a $23,000 price tag, you've already lost the sale (not that that is too expensive for you, ladies, I mean, ummm... the right woman). You've gotta create appreciation for the hand stitched Corinthian leather dating back to biblical times, the hand machined throaty V-12 that delivers to your passenger seat the exact same vibrational resonance as an Oral-B battery operated vibrating head toothbrush (?), and the $2000 a pop P-Zero soft rubber tires you'll need to replace at the end of summer. Then, when you tell me it only costs $128,000, I'll think it's a steal.

So here's your ground work:

1. People are spending much more time entertaining each other than via 1 way media.
Newspapers, Magazines, Billboards, and even TV is losing attention. Instead, people, you, are buried nose deep in your iPhone or Android's Facebook, Youtube, or Twitter.

Facebook says that over 50% of their users login every day. If they spend 23 minutes per login checking friends photos and returning messages, thats the length of a primetime sitcom.

Facebook has 400 million active users. The #1 rated primetime sitcom Friends had 52 million viewers.

I remember a conference where a Harvard Business School professor spoke. He asked, "If you're going to sell a bible, who'd you rather sell it to? Someone with or without one?"

Most of us in the audience said, "without."

"How would you sell a bible to a non-christian?!" he glared back at us.

"If you're going to sell a bible, who'd you rather sell it to? Someone with or without one?"

"I'd have a much better chance of selling a bible to the fanatic who already has ten of em!"

He was right. There are two kinds of Twitter uers who follow you.

1) Christians and ... oh, wait... People who RT

and

2) People who don't.

In otherwords, there's really no sense asking people who never RT to Retweet a post for you. Is there?

Twitter vs Facebook Social Media Marketing: CTR Effectiveness and Conversion Rates

After almost half a decade of Twitter and Facebook being around, nobody seems to clearly understand the pros and cons of either for use in marketing. In fact, I started Googling for a competitive matrix that compared all the key web marketing factors applied between Facebook and Twitter. I Fail.

So I just built one myself. Below is a table that compares these two social media marketing powerhouses across 15 key web marketing criteria. The terms used are industry terms so if you're not sure what each one means, I've also included a video discussion of this matrix below.

In any case, while you can measure a googleplex worth of criteria, in the end, effective marketing simply comes down to how many hours did you have to spend to create a dollar? Will Twitter make me that same dollar faster than Facebook? Twitter vs Facebook CTR and social media marketing matrix:

So how do Twitter clicks look compared Facebook clicks over time? With Twitter, You're going to see a jump in the beginning and a rapid tapering off. After about an hour, your Tweet gets buried. Facebook however doesn't really have a CTR spurt. It stays constant over about a 12 hour period before your Facebook status post gets buried.

Now that you're equipped with data that helps you project your marketing and advertising ROI, you'll find that creating the above conversion rates and CTRs are not as easy as it seems. Especially since Facebook has a 5,000 friend limit, you'll have to start using Facebook pages.
