Top Biotech & Tech Publicists / PR Firms in NYC LA San Francisco Chicago San Diego and Seoul REVEAL...

Media_httpshannamannc_fchen

Doctors, Engineers, Executives, etc... all take executive level seminars on a regular basis to keep up with the latest changes in technology and their industry - often several times a year. If they don't they'd be bringing a bow and arrow to a laser fight.

Oddly, technology and media are the fastest changing industries and yet most CEOs and Marketing media professionals are still trying to promote and advertise their products, services, events, companies, and retail stores they same way they did since before the internet.

This is why your products and services aren't selling. This is why your web traffic is abysmal. You're still playing by the same rules that used to work when you mailed in post cards to your favorite newspaper columnist.

Media_http1bpblogspot_kjfia

When's the last time you picked up a newspaper?

When's the last time you even heard the word, "columnist?"

The rules have now almost all changed. If you don't know the new media and social media landscape light-years better than your competitor, you'll sink back into the obscurity of the masses.

This is what's changed and how you can get your company, products, and services press and news coverage -- by the Top Biotech & Tech Publicists / PR Firms in NYC, LA, San Francisco, Chicago, Seoul, and San Diego. Enjoy.

How to Get Power-Bloggers to Link to You Fast

Media_httphamptonsgue_zfhmw

We all know the concept of a side door.

Everyone tries to get in through the front door of a club, a concert, an exhibit... and the only people who really get in without any hassle are the people who use the side door.

Well, with popular bloggers, it's the same situation.

Getting mentioned by a power blogger is a double benefit. First, you get instant exposure to their loyal readership of multiple thousands immediately. Second, since they get sooooo many inbound links, you'll immediately get shot up to the top of Google. But since everybody knows this everyone is going to try to reach them.

This is how most people try to get featured by a major blog:

Media_httpwwwgoodbyem_ovbtd

The Front Door

1. They use the contact link on the blog website.

2. They try to tweet
at people like @xenijardin http://twitter.com/#!/xenijardin

3. They try to email these guys.

IF you're advanced, maybe you're a PR pro, you'll

4. ask for their content calendar
and you'll try to tie in your product or company to something relevant to them.

STOP.

Unless you're getting paid hourly by the government, don't do any of the above.

Everyone is using the above methods. As far as method #4, there are far fewer people who as savvy enough to ask for a content calendar so while the volume of your competition shrinks with this approach, all the others asking for a content calendar are dudes and girls who are seasoned PR pros who went to Columbia University for their journalism degree.

So if you use any of the above strategies, you're literally

a. competing with a huge number of amateurs

b. smaller number of seasoned power pr vets.

And, worst of all, even if you do get scheduled for inclusion into a power blogger's blog like mashable or boingboing, it's going to be on THEIR time table. It's going to be when THEY want to mention you... NOT when you need the traffic for your seasonal sales push.

Media_httpwwwthefaste_dajtb

So, instead, use the side door.

The side door has 7 steps to get you into a power-blogger's blog in just a few hours. In fact, these steps are only used by industry insiders like Michael Arrington (sold his blog: techcrunch for $30 million dollars) and Jason Calacanis (sold his blog network for about $27 Million) and even Google itself. Basically, it's the difference between how a realtor looks at realestate vs Donald Trump. And the 7 steps specifically give you detailed instructions and steps to follow.

After your first read, you'll immediately wonder why you didn't do this any sooner.

In fact... I'll give you one of the steps that didn't make the grade. This is a technique to get into major power blogs that wasn't even worth including in the 7 step list. But, it's much more effective and powerful than anything that most people ever do. Only the best of the best PR pros use this 8th strategy.

Even though only the best of the best PR pros use this 8th strategy, part of the reason this particular technique didn't make the list is because you may have already heard of it and because it's just not as effective as any of the other 7.

Powerful Ways to Get Featured by a Power Blogger
(That Weren't Good Enough for the 7 Step Trade Secret List)

Every now and then, some brilliant and resourceful person looks at how laborious and tedious it is to try and get press. Then they decide to structure a simpler way of doing do.

Craig did this with the newspaper classifieds.

He simply decided to create a simple and instant way to post a classified. By the way, Craig makes about $20 million dollars a month. I know, totally unrelated factoid.

Pete Shankman and Jason Kintzer did the same thing to blogging that Craig did to classifieds. They created http://www.helpareporter.com/ and http://pitchengine.com , respectively.

Try them out. But...

But they are still not good enough to mention in our 7 Step Trade Secret Strategies to Get Featured by a Major Blogger.

How to Convince Your Boss to Create a Social Media Twitter Marketing Budget: Leyla Arsan, Lotus Marketing Services

me: Great... So Leyla Arsan, Welcome to the http://Sparkah.com Gmail Chat Show!

Twitter is a fantastic tool that works beautifully within a well integrated marketing and PR campaign
11:43 AM leyla: Hi Bob! Glad to be here (even though it's not a real place - ED).
11:44 AM me: So, I'm excited to get you on the show for a couple of reasons.
  1) You've been on twitter for a LONGGGG time.
11:45 AM 2) You have the perfect mix of background experience for Small business owners and Corporate Execs who'd want to use new media to reach their marketing
  3) Because I have no idea how to pronounce Leyla o_O
one marketing manager who gets his boss to agree to starting a Twitter feed but the boss was never convinced of the value... will quit
11:48 AM me: So when DID you join twitter? Were you in BEFORE Oprah, your neighbor?
leyla: I actually joined in late '07 or early '08 but didn't use it until about 18 or 20 months ago.
11:49 AM It took me a while to "get" it.
11:51 AM me: HAH! So in that time, I've noticed many business owners and execs startup then stop. I imagine that if it was productive, they'd still be using it. What do you tell your clients about marketing via Twitter?
11:52 AM leyla: I beg my clients to use Twitter. I think Twitter is a fantastic tool that works beautifully within a well integrated marketing and PR campaign
I think it is great for listening and customer service as well as outreach
11:53 AM me: So then, what are new business people doing wrong and why are they giving up after a few months?
11:54 AM In other words... what are some things business folks are doing NOW that hurts their marketing?
11:55 AM leyla: I think businesses are giving up for several reasons, but from what I have seen, many times it is because the committment was never there internally. Maybe it is one marketing manager who gets his boss to agree to starting a Twitter feed but the boss was never convinced of the value.
11:56 AM me: Oh.
leyla: Without a firm committment and dedicated budget, I think most of them will quit.
I think because many Directors of Marketing see their kids playing around with social media, they do not believe it is a "real" maketing tool
Media_httpmomconnectf_xbejr

 11:58 AM
me: Interesting.. So... in the case of a corporation, what do you recommend marketing managers tell their bosses and check signers to get that long term commitment? It seems like you're saying that more education is still necessary even after Twitter and Facebook, and social media has been out for years now
11:59 AM In other words... compared to say... print, radio, sales gumshoes... pros and cons of social media?
12:01 PM leyla: I think because many Directors of Marketing see their kids playing around with social media, they do not believe it is a "real" maketing tool. Also, because you cannot really quantify sales with Twitter, it is tough. You can quantify impressions but it is more difficult to say if those impressions convert.

I always believe in going in with numbers. Do some research before you reach out to your Dir. of Markeing, bring in some case studies of similar industries or even competitors.

12:04 PM me: Hah!
Fascinating! I love it! "many Directors of Marketing see their kids playing around with social media, they do not believe it is a "real" maketing tool"
I've never considered the domestic angle and how it influences budgets at the office!
12:05 PM Well... What do you tell your clients about reaching out to their markets? What works for them?

Especially since anybody can do it now... and there's a LOT of noise out there!
12:09 PM (yeah, marketing execs never see their kids playing around with the FTC or Koenig & Bauer AG Newspaper Printing Presses)
leyla: I know many of them are afraid of social media and they don't like the "gurus" or advocates of social media, so I always start off with my background. I assure them that I have experience working with other channels and that I do not work specifically with social media. This gives them a better sense of my capabilities and puts them at ease.

I think most marketers and business owners have a better time understanding new media as it relates to traditional marketing. If you can explain that it is just another platform, translate it in those terms, they seem to relate better.

12:11 PM me: That makes sense... just another medium ... evolved. Well, what industries do you deal with and can you share with us a unique problem - how you attacked it?
If I wanted to read your website, I'd just read your website. Social Media is more from the hip, more fun, less sell-y. Make it enjoyable for the consumer
12:14 PM leyla: I work with mostly small businesses. I have clients in food & beverage, retail/technology, travel and lifestyle.

I honestly believe my biggest problem is convincing my clients that this isn't a magic bullet. Sure, I can get a big audience for you in a short period of time but that is not part of my methodology. I think you're better suited building an audience more slowly and authentically.

sorry. better served, not better suited
12:15 PM me: Ahhh... interesting. So people come to you asking for a quick fix jump in business using social media like Twitter and Facebook?
12:16 PM What strategy works in the long and short term?
12:17 PM How does say, a retailer, an ecommerce store owner, a small professional service person grow a steady but compounding base?
Media_httpleylaruinse_ncdes
12:20 PM leyla: It depends on the brand and how likely the client is to give you some room to play. I don't like really corporate sounding feeds, I like friendly and warm conversation but many brands still want to use their standard brand voice.
12:21 PM me: Hmm... you actually bring up a good point. I've noticed that the brands and companies that do the best at making new followers convert to customers have a personal tone. NOT official sounding
12:23 PM leyla: When I first started blogging, one of my friends who was a web product manager took a look at my blog and said "If I wanted to read a book, I'd read a book." Because my text was too long & I didn't have any visual content.

Same goes for social media. If I wanted to read your website, I'd just read your website. Social Media is more from the hip, more fun, less sell-y. Make it enjoyable for the consumer.

12:25 PM me: Interesting. @starbucks @wholefoods etc all have very personal tones of voice. they sometimes even use expletives with * in them.
This is NOT your 1950s marketing style at all!
So... how DO I pronounce Leyla? o_O
12:26 PM PS.. i think that point about the fun tone is a major Take-Away! =p

they sometimes even use expletives with * in them
12:33 PM me: Do you work with business owners and marketing managers in the Chicago area exclusively? And if someone needs help convincing their boss to create a social media / traditional media budget... can you help? What's the best way to get a hold of you?

12:38 PM leyla: Most of my clients are in Chicago but I do have a client in New York. We connect bi-weekly via skype. I can help with social media and more traditional mareting communications as well as event marketing (where I started). I actually try to tie social media and events together as often as I can, I believe there is a very natural fit between the two.

Anyone can get a hold of me by going to my website http://www.lotusmarketingservices.com OR on Twitter http://www.twitter.com/Leyla_a

12:40 PM me: Excellent! I'd love to build on this theme of weaving in EVENT Marketing with Social Media... sounds like something most people wouldn't even consider... Can we have you back on our show some time next week?
12:41 PM leyla: sure. I'd love that because that is my sweet spot!
12:42 PM me: Excellent... I'm sure there's a lot of people out there thinking that an event wouldn't and couldn't help promote their business so I'm excited about how you might surprise them! =) I'll see you back on Twitter! - http://sparkah.com

Digg Style CMS aka PLIGG vs Wordpress: Which Is Right For Me?

Media_httpscrapetvcom_itibv

Advertising is expensive and it does a poor job of helping you develop a relationship with your market. If you advertise on Treehugger.com, even if you get a client or two, their primary relationship and bandwidth of loyalty still remains with Treehugger.com

Much like restaurant owners buying the land their eatery is sitting on, you'll greatly reduce you advertising spending and greatly increase the rapport you have with your market base if you simply own the blog that you advertise on.

So, now that you've decided to reroute your ad dollars into creating your own blog, which is best?

Well, there are several strong networks to consider:

1. Blogger

2. Wordpress

3. Tumblr

4. Posterous

5. More...

But let's address these in a the next blog post. There's a bigger picture to address first. Do you even want to pay bloggers or spend your own time generating blog post content to fill your blog? If no, you have a choice. All of the above requires that you pay writers or you have to write articles for yourself. Your alternative is to host a site where your users can submit their own mini posts.

Media_httpwwwlabnolor_nfhcg

Only a few organizations have chosen to adopt the User-Generated-Content model. But some of those who have are wildly successful. Take a look at multimillion dollar site http://digg.com and http://foodspotting.com/

The extra bonuses of hosting a user-generated-content site is that you are not responsible for any of the copyright infringement issues. Youtube just won that battle against Viacomm. Now the Digital Millennium Copyright Act says that your users cannot get you into a lawsuit. But the best part is, they do all the hard work of creating content.

Here's a feature by feature comparison:

CMS/Features PLIGG (Digg Style CMS) Wordpress
WYSIWYG Editor No Yes
Requirement for Design Modification HTML; PHP HTML; PHP
Legal Copyright Liability No Yes
Admin Level Simple Widget Modification Yes Yes
Allows User Generated Content Yes No
Allows Users Moderator Privileges Yes Yes
Allows Public Voting Up Popular Topics Yes No
Allows Public to Choose Home Page Featured Posts Yes No
Allows Multi Paragraph Long Form Blog Posting No Yes
Guests to Post Automatically Yes No
Allows Other Guests to Flag and Hide Other Guest Posts Yes No
Allows Public Comments Yes Yes
Google Friendly Yes Depends of Theme Used

So that was the good news. The bad news still applies for both. Even if you build it, they will not come. It's much easier to build readership traffic by assuming all the blogging production and copyright liability than by asking people to submit their stories to a site that has no traffic.

But there are ways to grow both -- rapidly. Contact me for help building your web branding and capturing your target market online. Say hello at 310 598 1606 and http://twitter.com/journik - Bob Wan Qi Kim

How to Add the Facebook Like Button to ELGG / PLIGG / Wordpress - Dynamic Urls

This took a bit of time to figure out. Once you know how, it's super easy. Since all the pages in ELGG / PLIGG or any CMS are dynamically generated in PHP, all you have to do is add php code that triggers the physical url into the facebook pluggin. So instead of entering http://DisastEarth.com in the URL field at http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like ... you'd enter {$story_url}

BUT DON'T.

Continued: Facebook Marketing

Although PLIGG uses {$story_url} to reference urls, ELGG, and other CMSs may not. So... to find out what php code your CMS like Wordpress or Drupal uses, just open up one of your site template pages and look for <a href="THISisTHEphpCODEyouNEED"

You're not done yet.

Do NOT put the THISisTHEphpCODEyouNEED or {$story_url} in the facebook plugins builder wizard. It'll render these characters, "{$}" into their HTML code. You need these characters as-is - NOT converted to html code. So, just go into your html text editor and add {$story_url} or THISisTHEphpCODEyouNEED instead of the static url:

So, like.php?href=http%253A%252F%252Fdisastearth.com%252F

becomes like.php?href={$story_url} or like.php?href={THISisTHEphpCODEyouNEED

Here's the last step. If your facebook like button still doesn't work, the reason is simple. THISisTHEphpCODEyouNEED may just generate a partial url like http://story.php?title=a-bp-gulf-oil-spill-photo-i-will-never-forget-tedchris ... it's missing the domain name. So.. just add: http://disastearth.com/ right in front of THISisTHEphpCODEyouNEED. If you do it right, in PLIGG, it looks like this:

like.php?href=http%253A%252F%252Fdisastearth.com{$story_url}

Wordpress or ELGG Theme CSS Template Doesn't Show / Work - Permissions Problem

I've been wrestling with CMS: ELGG install on a Mediatemple and Godaddy and Rackspace Server for the longest time. Every single install lost all it's theme or css styles. I've paid hundreds of dollars to programmers to have them all fail at installing wordpress and ELGG properly. I called MediaTemple.net. I go lucky. The tech I spoke with had experience. He fixed the style sheet / template problem instantly with one click.

He disabled PHP Safemode in the hosting control panel.

Thats all it took. I lost weeks of sleep over this.

If you want to plug a pipe directly into my brain, find me at http://twitter.com/journik ... i've learn a lot of things the hard way. Tweet me a hello and pool our painfully gained super powers!
